A 4-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission with reverse allows power to travel. 

To avoid serious damage to the transmission or clutch, you must fully disconnect the clutch before shifting gears. To avoid similar consequences, do not downshift at high speeds.

The final drive is handled by 102-link, 420 O-ring chains. You can replace the front sprocket if it becomes stuck to the 420 O-ring chains or the 438 with a 520 chain.

X-rings are better for wear resistance. To make the 1st and 2nd gears usable, your front sprocket may need to be changed to 17T.


All SSR125 pit bikes, except for the fully automated trim, are kick-start only. The kick-start lever can be found on the right side (towards the right footpeg) of the engine case. 

You will find one of two engine-off switches on the SSR125, depending on your trim. It is either an ignition kill button near the left handgrip or an on/off thumb switch at the center of the handlebar.

Brakes & Tires

Special trims such as the SR125B2 Pro (grandfathered) and SR125TR/TRW have 60/100 – R14/12 front and 80/100 – 10 rear tires from the factory. 

All other models, manual and automatic, have 2.75-14 front knobbies and 3.00-12 rear. The stock rubber remained the same except for the current SR125TR trims which switched to tubed 100/70 R17 front and 100/90 R14 rear tires on steel wheels. 

It is unclear if the stock size for brakes is 190mm. Research suggests that disc sizes can range from 190mm to 240mm depending on whether you swap out factory tires.

The front hydraulic fork of some models is not adjustable, but the rear shocks compensate by providing 6 inches of wheel travel.

There are very few differences in vehicle dimensions between the grandfathered and current SSR pit bikes. 

The only thing that differed between trims was the seat height. The SSR125 is a small bike that is best suited for riders less than 5’11” or lighter than 200 lbs.


Only the SR125TR and SR125TR -BW models had a subframe out of all the SSR 125 trims. 

All models include hand grips, front and back fenders, skid plates, exhaust guards, handlebars, and an aluminum top crown. The SR125 Semi-Automatic bikes feature redesigned plastics as well as race-type mufflers. 

All other plastics, except for the SR125TR/TRW body panels (black with red accents), were available in red, orange, black, white, and green.

The MSRP of the SSR dirt bikes varies depending on the trim and model year. There are currently 14 models under the SSR125 series. 

Nine of the models have been discontinued, leaving room for the five currently available models. 

Three models currently on the market have a manual transmission while two others have semi- and fully automated ones. The SR125A1 model is the cheapest, and the SR125TR–BW is the most expensive.

  • After a year of riding, heavy riders can easily damage the front suspension. Many off-roaders love the softness of the front shocks, even if they are in a crate.
  • Stock footpegs and shift levers are quite fragile. Handlebars are no exception. It is recommended to replace handlebars with 7/8” Pro Taper handlebars (view Amazon) for better handling.

Unfortunately, the SSR 125 is receiving a lot of hatred on bike forums – partly because of former owners’ legitimate experiences using the wheeler, and a half because of groupthink. This should not be surprising. 

It’s not easy to see Jeff Willows as a champion on a bufferSSR when most of the parts that average riders get from a motorcycle are faulty shocks, clutch problems, or weak parts.
